2018 Team (from left to right): Shane, Zoe, Lily, Jeneba, Stewart and Louis
Last weekend the inaugural Mountain Marathon Training Camp for young people was held. Hosted in the Howgills by Zoe Harding and Shane Ohly, four keen runners joined us for two days (and one night session) of mountain running with a focus on navigation, strategy and skills specific for mountain marathon events.
Our participants ranged in age from 16 to 19 and came from orienteering or fell and cross country running backgrounds. Whilst some already had much mountain marathon experience, others were complete novices, but all left the weekend fired up for their next mountain marathon event.
A weekend of summer camping wouldn’t be complete with marshmallows and a camp fire!
There has been some fantastic feedback, and special mention needs to go to Zoe who delivered all the mountain navigation training, as Shane is currently injured. Also, many thanks to Harvey Maps who provide two superb training maps specially commissioned to mountain marathon specification for the training weekend.
We shall be returning in 2019 with another training camp specifically aimed at younger runners (aged 16-21) who are interested in learning about mountain marathons, improving their mountain skills and navigation and having a great weekend on the hills.
If you would like to take part in the 2019 training camp, please register your interest. In the meantime we’ll leave you with some images from 2018.
